Brussels Parliament Recognizes Gaza Genocide: A Historic Victory for Justice

Brussels- In a landmark decision on February 3, 2025, the Brussels Parliament adopted a resolution recognizing the acts committed in Gaza as genocide and calling for sanctions against Israel. This resolution represents a major breakthrough in the fight for justice and accountability for the Palestinian people.
The March 30 Movement, which has long advocated for the Palestinian cause, proudly acknowledges this historic step. The movement’s electoral initiative, Viva Palestina, was centered on one crucial demand: for the Brussels Parliament to formally recognize the genocide in Gaza. During the 2024 campaign, Viva Palestina introduced this demand into the political debate, engaged extensively with political parties, and applied pressure to push them to take a stance. Today, we see the results of that work materializing, as the resolution has now been adopted at the commission level and is on its way to a plenary vote.
During the electoral campaign, the March 30 Movement (Viva Palestina) debated with the parties supporting this project, which has been adopted by the commission and will hopefully soon be approved by the Parliament. This included discussions with the Member of Parliament who filed the resolution. We salute the commitment and integrity of those who have worked to bring this crucial issue before the Parliament. Their leadership, along with the support of progressive parties, has ensured that Brussels becomes the first parliament to officially recognize the genocide in Gaza. This recognition is not only a moral and political victory but also a powerful statement from the capital of Europe—one that will hopefully inspire other legislative bodies to follow suit.
We urge all parties to vote in favor of this resolution in the plenary session, ensuring that Brussels continues to lead by example in the fight for justice and human rights.
The resolution calls for practical measures, including the prohibition of arms exports to Israel and the cessation of economic missions to the country. These sanctions align with the growing international demand for accountability and justice in response to Israel’s actions in Gaza.
As the March 30 Movement, we remain steadfast in our mission to end Israeli impunity. Through both legal and political avenues, we will continue to push for justice, including through our legal arm, the Hind Rajab Foundation, which has been actively pursuing cases against Israeli war criminals in national and international courts.
The recognition of the genocide in Gaza by the Brussels Parliament marks a turning point in the international struggle for Palestinian justice. It is a testament to the power of grassroots advocacy and political engagement. The March 30 Movement celebrates this milestone and considers that Viva Palestina will have fully served its purpose once this resolution is officially adopted. Moving forward, we will continue our broader mission to ensure that this recognition translates into meaningful action on a global scale.
